7 Ideas for Packaging Design Inspiration

by | May 25, 2020 | Packaging Design Blogs

As a business owner, you’re already aware of just how important your packaging design is to the overall impact of your brand. Your customer’s decision to buy your product is often influenced by how much they like your design.

In previous posts, we’ve explored the process of creating a great package design, as well as how product packaging design builds your brand. In this post, you’ll get to see some brands at the top of their game, with packaging design that speaks to their consumers in all the right ways.

1. We Compost

This New Zealand-based composting brand took an inventive approach with their waste bin liner design. Instead of featuring overused imagery such as trees, leaves, or recycle symbols for their product, they feature oversized, abstract worm imagery, bright colors, and lots of negative space. The effect is fun, modern, and easy to understand for their customers.

2. Hardy Smoked Salmon

Hardy, a third-generation Portuguese family business, does one thing very, very well: smoked salmon. The brand’s packaging perfectly reflects their ideals of sophistication, simplicity, and refined taste.

Their packaging features deconstructed salmon imagery, a creative peek at the product itself, and simple-yet-bold title font.

3. Callaly

This up-and-coming feminine hygiene brand uses product design to speak to its ideal customer: young, hip women who are sick of the bland world of tampons and liners they’ve grown up with. Since this company offers subscription-based services, its product packaging needed to be both practical and engaging. Their designers opted for a petal-style fold-out box that features information about the company on each panel.

The products themselves are encased in packaging that is loud, fun, and modern, three words that you don’t often use to describe feminine products.

4. Western

The design for these music cords is a great example of when less is definitely more. A simple cord sleeve allows the product itself to function as part of the design. Classic, Western-themed fonts add to the brand story, and the bold white, black, and gold color scheme allows this product to stand out on the shelves.

5. Granville Island Pet Treats

This Vancouver-area “pet treatery” debuted packaging that appeals to both the grocery and gift-buying markets. The company caters to furry companions with food sensitivities, so their packaging design is all about transparency: see-through packaging to showcase the quality of the treats themselves, easy to find ingredients and a hierarchical design that features their clean products.

6. Yellow Beauty

Yellow Beauty’s skincare line is based on one star ingredient: turmeric, the nutritional powerhouse known for its anti-inflammatory qualities both internally and externally.

Yellow Beauty’s packaging design is a case study in the use of typography as a sole design element. They may not have a logo in the traditional sense, but by establishing a recognizable color palette, color-blocked design, and appealing typography for all of the products in their line makes their stuff instantly “branded.”

7. All WellO

The design for All WellO’s juice line is a great example of using transparent packaging that lets the product’s natural colors play a role in the appeal to purchasers.

This design trend is especially strategic for brands whose commitment to all-natural, fresh ingredients is a major part of their brand story. The see-through packaging points to an element of transparency in the company itself.

Product packaging is an exciting way to really flex your brand’s muscle. It’s your way to show off your personality, mission, and voice to your consumers.
